iWalk iGrow iRead
Back in 2010, Bob Klose and I were hired by the County of Sonoma to create a public inspiration campaign to motivate our community to get healthier! Their goal was to be the healthiest county in California by the year 2020. (Who could’ve guessed what that year would really be like…) iWALK was the first campaign. It encouraging people to walk to work and school and to form neighborhood walking groups.
We started this campaign by creating posters of “double-take” images of famous local people walking in pink tutus. The posters got noticed and people were requesting copies of their favorites. Then we moved onto to iGROW. This was a campaign to promote growing your own food featuring some of the first – Garden not Lawns! – concepts. A few years later, the Sonoma County Community Foundation hired Studio B to create iREAD. This campaign promoted reading to young children.
The image featuring a young tattooed man with words that says “i READ to my kids” was initially controversial. People were concerned that we were featuring someone in a gang. We answered “If someone IS in a gang… wouldn’t you want them engaged and reading to their kids?” That turned the tide and the poster was printed and became one of our most requested posters. So… iWHAT’S NEXT? I think this campaign still has legs.
